Apple’s iPhone 15 lineup will include a mix of last year’s A16 Bionic and the cutting-edge A17 Bionic, the latter of which is rumored to only be found in the ‘Pro’ models. Given the number of iPhones the company ships every quarter, TSMC’s 4nm and 3nm orders (also known as N4P and N3, respectively) should increase in the coming months. The chip maker has seen its revenue decline in 2023, with some industry insiders commenting that Apple’s A-series orders are crucial to the manufacturer’s growth this year.
TSMC’s revenue can grow moderately this year, assuming iPhone 15 demand remains strong in the last quarter
Apple has currently secured all of TSMC’s initial 3nm shipments, giving it an edge against the competition. The alliance of the two entities not only gives the California-based giant access to cutting-edge processes but it also allows TSMC to post healthy revenue growth for each successive quarter. However, the Taiwanese firm has experienced a slight decline in earnings, and according to ITHome, unnamed industry insiders have commented that it will be up to A16 Bionic and A17 Bionic orders to determine the company’s growth.
The report does not mention how many A17 Bionic chip orders TSMC has undertaken, but this year, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are said to arrive with more exclusive features compared to last year. This difference should elevate demand in the fourth quarter of 2023, allowing TSMC to experience a small degree of success for the remaining portion of the year.
It should also be mentioned that 3nm wafers were priced around $20,000, likely discouraging the likes of Qualcomm and MediaTek from placing any orders for their own SoCs, though they are said to launch the next-generation silicon in 2024. Apple will gladly pay the premium to TSMC if it means having an advantage over the competition. This year, we should also see the company unveil the M3 for a wide range of Mac models, and the chipset is said to be mass produced on the 3nm process, just like the A17 Bionic.
However, Mac shipments are nowhere near the capacity of iPhones, so this may be why the report did not mention the M3 being a determining force of TSMC’s revenue growth for 2023. The iPhone 15 lineup is expected to get announced in September, with pre-orders possibly kicking off a week after the official unveiling, so we will review how well TSMC has fared at the end of the year.
