Apple Went The Extra Mile In Implementing Detailed Visual Feedback On visionOS When Using The Virtual Keyboard

Visual feedback implementation in visionOS

The Apple Vision Pro has support for a virtual keyboard, and the company’s visionOS also allows you to pop up productivity apps seamlessly with ‘limitless’ screen real estate. Though this keyboard can get some work done, the lack of haptic feedback can limit your speed, but Apple likely knew about this limitation and implemented some detailed visual effects and cues when you use the virtual keyboard.

When using a virtual keyboard, the lack of ‘haptic feedback’ is somewhat compensated with the detailed visual cues

The little details can be seen in visionOS thanks to a tweet posted by Atilla Taşkıran, showing the visual changes when a single key press occurs. Knowing full well that the lack of haptic feedback will hamper productivity, the virtual keyboard gets a bevy of visual shifts, starting with the keys getting highlighted as your finger hovers above them prior to performing the keystroke.

Next, when you press on any virtual key, there is an animation where the key is pushed downwards on the z-axis, with the visual feedback similar to how you press a key on an actual typewriter. Fortunately, that is not the end of the entire visual cycle because shortly after pressing the virtual keyboard, a small circular pulse shows up around the key, delivering visual confirmation that it has been pressed successfully.

In total, three visual changes went into forming a single keystroke, revealing the attention to detail that Apple has undertaken to ensure that visionOS does not end up delivering a half-baked experience. Of course, there are those who prefer reliable haptic feedback, and with the company seemingly started work on the Vision Pro successor, it is possible that a similar functionality is present, but that may not happen until 2025.

We will not be surprised if Apple updates its visionOS to enable a feature that mimics the same feeling as typing on a physical keyboard. If that is not sufficient, it is also possible to connect the Vision Pro to the Magic Keyboard or Magic Mouse if you are not used to the virtual keyboard.
