After it was revealed that the M2 Ultra could compete with Intel’s and AMD’s top-end desktop processors while being slightly faster than the M1 Ultra in multi-core performance, a new Geekbench 6 compute benchmark has surfaced. What is surprising to see is that it is only 10 percent slower than the RTX 4080, which is NVIDIA’s second-fastest desktop GPU, behind the RTX 4090.

Coming to the scores, this version of the M2 Ultra features 128GB of unified RAM and a 24-core CPU configuration, which only means that the variant being tested sports 76 GPU cores. The chip obtained 220,674 points in the Metal benchmark, and compared to other hardware, it fares exceptionally well. First, let us compare it to its direct predecessor, the M1 Ultra. According to the Metal benchmark charts, the M1 Ultra obtains a score of 150,407.
This massive difference indicates that the M2 Ultra is 46 percent faster than the M1 Ultra, and one of those reasons is likely the jump in GPU cores. Where the M1 Ultra could top out at 64 GPU cores, the M2 Ultra takes it one step further with a 76-core GPU configuration. However, that is not the best part because Apple’s latest, and obviously greatest, is barely slower than a desktop RTX 4080. On Twitter, James Atkinson mentioned YouTuber Vadim Yuryev, updating him on the Geekbench 6 compute scores.
The RTX 4080 scored 245,808 in the same test, making the M2 Ultra only 10 percent slower in this category. Of course, Apple’s flagship SoC will perform differently in other Geekbench benchmarks, but it is something to point out and admire the progress of the technology giant’s custom silicon division. We can only guess what surprises are headed in our direction when the M3 lineup shows up late this year or in early 2024.

However, when we tried searching for the same RTX 4080 score in Geekbench 6, we could not, but when we looked around at the Geekbench 6 database, the RTX 4080 obtained more or less the same results. In short, it was a positive feeling to see the M2 Ultra trade blows with a desktop GPU and prior to the Mac Studio and Mac Pro launch, we will come across more comparisons, so be sure to stick around for the next one.
