For those who have not been keeping up to date, Samsung got a lot of hate this year for the Galaxy Z Fold 5, with a lot of people even claiming that the phone barely offers anything new as compared to its counterparts, while I do agree with that, the one thing that I have to put it out is that Samsung has been doing foldable phones for five years or so and while the latest foldable doesn't offer much in terms of looks, it has a lot of improvements under the hood, namely the hinge that has improved a lot.
Galaxy Z Fold 5 durability test shows why Samsung is still king of foldable phones
The new Flex Hinge not only allows the Galaxy Z Fold 5 to fold completely flat but is also made with fewer moving parts, which not only allows the hinge to be thinner but it also allows the hinge to be more durable since there is a lot less tension amongst the moving parts. This means that the new foldable should be more durable, and it turns out that is the case based on Zack's torturous bend test. I call it torturous because, let's be honest, no one will ever be able to put their phone through a similar use in real life.
Now, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 survived, and it did. I was holding my breath during the bend test, but the phone remained unbent. Sure, it does bend the other way, but then again, it's the hinge that is causing the phone to bend, but it still doesn't break. If you recall, the Pixel Fold also went through the bend test, and it didn't survive when bent the same way. This goes to show that Samsung has made significant improvements to the overall hinge and the rest of the design, and if you are worried that your phone might give up on you, that is not the case.
The Galaxy Z Fold 5 is not the only foldable that received some durability. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is impressive, to say the least. Using the same hinge, the phone managed to cross over 400,000 folds, beating Samsung's official number by more than twice and then giving up. This goes to show that despite these phones offering the same design, Samsung is definitely making some changes that make these phones so good in terms of their durability. So, if you are searching the market for something good, this is your chance.
