Gigabyte Gen5 SSDs Get Faster With AORUS Gen5 12000 Series, Up To 12 GB/s Transfer Speeds

The AORUS Gen5 12000 SSD is an update to the existing AORUS 10000 SSD. We already took a look at the Gen5 10000 SSD which comes with a massive M.2 Thermal Guard Xtreme heatsink and the same is true for the new 12000 design.

In terms of specifications, the AORUS Gen5 12000 SSD still relies on the Phison E26 controller and makes use of a very similar design, only with faster DRAM speeds that allow for higher read & write transfer speeds. The drive is rated at up to 12,000 MB/s Read and 11,000 MB/s Write speeds. The SSD will come in 1 TB and 2 TB flavors but we were also told that higher capacity variants will arrive later this year starting with 4 TB and eventually moving to 8 TB in 2024 as DRAM and Flash for Gen 5.0 hardware improves.

Cooling Gen5 drives is a major issue and Gigabyte has its massive M.2 Thermal Guard Xtreme with Nanocarbon coating. This heatsink comes with a massive aluminum fin array and houses a total of two heat pipes that make contact with the lower heatsink block and move it to the secondary block. The whole thing is passively cooled and keeps the temperature around 50C. In addition to the big heatsink, AORUS also adds a graphene pad on top for better thermal dissipation.

According to Gigabyte, the AORUS Gen5 12000 NVMe SSD is expected to hit retail in Q3 2023 and will be priced slightly higher than the Gen5 10000 NVMe SSDs which are already available in retail. The drives will come with a 5-year warranty and expect more information soon. You can also check out our review of several Gen5 SSDs including the AORUS Gen5 10000 over here.
