Portable gaming consoles are slowly carving their way into the market. The first device to truly make a notable mark in the industry was the Nintendo Switch, followed by the Steam Deck. Qualcomm, too is said to be in talks with various giants, and assuming those discussions are headed in the right direction, we might have a Snapdragon-branded handheld launch soon.
Qualcomm had initially planned an Android-powered gaming console that would feature Switch-like detachable controllers
It appears that the talks are in their earliest stages, with a tweet from Revegnus stating that Qualcomm SVP, Alex Katouzian, is apparently in discussions with Nintendo and Sony to develop hardware that might be similar to the competition. It is unclear how this potential partnership will pan out. From one aspect, we can see Qualcomm requiring some assistance from Nintendo regarding the design and functionality of the handheld gaming console.
As for Sony, Qualcomm may partner with the Japanese firm in an effort to develop and launch exclusive mobile games that are optimized for the Snapdragon platform. As for the hardware, where Sony and Nintendo source their chips from other vendors, Qualcomm has years of experience in this category, developing and bringing its own solutions. Its Adreno 740 belonging to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, is easily the fastest Android smartphone GPU right now, trading blows with Apple’s A16 Bionic.
According to Alex Katouzian, Senior Vice President at Qualcomm, Qualcomm has recently been in discussions with Nintendo and Sony SIE regarding the future development of portable gaming devices.Of course, it's unclear if this will actually lead to a partnership

However, a portable gaming handheld will have more space for heat dissipation, meaning that Qualcomm may not outfit the chassis with just another smartphone SoC and call it a day. We believe that whatever silicon will be used, it will be developed from the ground up and deliver more kick than your Android flagship. As it so happens, the company is expected to launch the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 next year with its custom Oryon cores which would be possible thanks to its Nuvia acquisition. Again, this chip will be found in high-end smartphones.
Fortunately, Qualcomm is also said to be working on the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4, a chipset featuring a 12-core configuration that is designed to be found in notebook computers. Something similar could be found in this gaming console, with the device running Android right off the bat. The San Diego firm has been previously rumored to be working on a Nintendo Switch-like portable gaming console with detachable controllers, but as you can guess, that product never materialized. As the latest rumor suggests, Qualcomm is willing to partner up if it means getting a device to the market.
