Advanced Micro Devices, Inc's (AMD) chief executive officer, Dr. Lisa Su, is currently on a visit to Taiwan that has been relatively muted when compared to an earlier visit by her peer, NVIDIA CEO Mr. Jensen Huang. Dr. Su is visiting Taiwan for a ceremony that will award her an honorary doctorate. Before she attends the ceremony, the AMD executive is also expected to meet the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company's (TSMC) CEO Dr. C.C. Wei and the chairman of the contract manufacturing firm Pegatron according to local media reports. Rumors also suggest Dr. Su's visit will involve TSMC's 3-nanometer chip manufacturing technologies. Still, they have not been confirmed by any official sources, which is also unlikely.
AMD Chief Dr. Lisa Su Will Be Awarded A Honorary Doctorate From Taiwan's National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University
Dr. Su, as her title suggests, is already a Ph.D. She received her full doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Electrical Engineering - a field closely related to semiconductor fabrication since chips involve the transfer of electric current at perhaps the smallest level that can be manufactured.
Her degree ceremony is slated for Thursday, and before that, the AMD chief will visit two important companies in Taiwan. The first of these will be a visit to the contract manufacturer Pegatron, and she will meet the firm's chairman. Pegaton is a major company that assembles motherboards, laptops, smartphones and other personal computing equipment.
The executive's second visit will be to TSMC, which is perhaps AMD's most important supplier. The partnership between the two has enabled AMD to gain a strong manufacturing partner that is capable of delivering high technology products that few other companies in the world can manufacture. Setting up semiconductor fabrication facilities is capitally and intellectually intensive, and TSMC has enabled AMD and Apple to procure advanced semiconductors built according to custom demands.

Naturally, the close relationship between the pair has also created speculation about what Dr. Su and Dr. C.C. Wei - TSMC's CEO - will discuss. Speculation persists that they will discuss a partnership for 3-nanometer chip products. These are the latest semiconductors in the industry right now, and TSMC started making them late last year. The first batch of the chip manufacturer's latest products is always thought to be headed Apple's way.
This is due to a multitude of factors, such as the close relationship between the two, which sees Apple invest quite a bit into TSMC and the fact that smartphone processors have relatively lighter technical requirements than the personal computing products which AMD buys.
Some are also speculating that one reason why Dr. Su's visit is relatively low key when compared to Mr. Huang's is the fact that he needs to generate more hype for his company due to catchy uses such as e-sports. On the other hand, AMD is more focused on business and enterprise customers, which does not require much media coverage and is better kept quiet.
