Intel Arc GPUs Keep On Getting Better, Latest Linux Driver Further Improves Performance 1

Intel Arc GPUs and their respective drivers are truly the fine wine of this generation as they continue to receive performance optimizations across the board.

Intel Has Been Competing On Linux For Rapid Support On the Platform, Nearing the Levels of Competitors

We recently talked about Intel's driver optimizations in Vulkan drivers on Linux. Now, courtesy of Michael Larabel from Phoronix, we have the figures for performance uplifts of the new drivers.

Intel has been rapidly developing its open-source Vulkan drivers for Linux recently, incorporating technologies like ray tracing & generally improving overall performance for its GPUs like the Arc family. It was said that the driver optimizations were halted due to a lack of support for the " I915_FORMAT_MOD_4_TILED_DG2_RC_CCS" modifier, but now it has been added due to which the benchmarks were obtained.

The benchmarks were carried out on the Intel Arc Graphics A770 GPU with Linux 6.4. You can view the figures across several titles below (Credits: Phoronix):

counter-strike-global-offensive-1920-x-1080-vulkan

cyberpunk-2077-2560-x-1440-ultra
unigine-superposition-1920-x-1080-fullscreen-low-opengl
vkmark-1920-x-1080-mailbox

The above benchmarks highlight that Intel Arc drivers have gained a noticeable performance boost through the new driver optimizations. VKMark Vulkan benchmark witnessed the most significant performance improvement, which is appreciable since synthetic benchmarking applications aren't optimized as well as in other platforms.

Intel has been giving it all to provide better open-source platform support to its consumers. Given that the launch of the Arc lineup is far after offerings from NVIDIA/AMD, it is impressive to see the company being highly competitive on Linux. Despite that, Intel has worked really hard to offer great driver support not only for Linux but for Windows too where the Arc GPU lineup competes well with the existing products from AMD & NVIDIA.

We expect further enhancements within the open-source driver stack, especially in next-gen launches by Intel. Moreover, we shouldn't forget here to credit the guys at Phoronix for providing insights on developments for the Linux platform.
