In yet another instance where the iPhone 14’s Emergency SOS via Satellite ended up saving lives, a family of five was caught between the wildfires happening in Maui, Hawaii, and the lack of cellphone reception did not help matters either. Luckily for those people, one of them had an iPhone 14 in possession and used it to call for help.
Surrounded by the wildfires, it was impossible to call for help, with the iPhone 14’s feature informing first responders
As noted by 9to5Mac, a family of five was stuck in a van with no way to call for help as they attempted to protect themselves from the wildfires. According to Michael J. Miraflor, the five people’s lives could have been in jeopardy had one of them not owned an iPhone 14, which is the only device in the U.S. that has the ability to alert authorities using its Emergency SOS via Satellite.
According to the tweet below, when there is no cellphone reception, iPhone 14 owners can toggle the Emergency SOS via Satellite feature, and it asks the user some questions regarding their current predicament. Afterward, a connection with a satellite begins, which can take a few minutes to complete because of the distance between the two. Shortly, a message conversation starts between the authorities and you, where they receive relevant information, such as your coordinates, allowing them to send help to your location.

No cell service, so Apple Emergency SOS was the only way they could get in contact with first responders. Literally saved their lives. pic.twitter.com/PpxNwTGOAf

CNN reports that Capt. Aja L. Kirksey, Sector Commander of Coast Guard Sector Honolulu, also collaborated with the first responders to aid the residents as much as they could, though putting out wildfires is a near-impossible task.
“On behalf of the US Coast Guard, I wish to convey my sincere condolences to the communities who have been tragically affected by the fires in Maui. Our collaboration with partner agencies and neighboring jurisdictions remains steadfast, as we unite our resources, knowledge, and equipment to ensure responder and public safety and amplify the impact of our response efforts.”
In related news, the iPhone 14’s Emergency SOS via Satellite saved a man’s life after his car fell 400 feet in a canyon. Just like the family saved from the surrounding wildfires, the iPhone 14 provided the exact location of the man, allowing first responders to find him quickly before something tragic happened.
