Google is looking to Supercharge Assistant By Integrating it with Bard, Company's Own Large Language Model

It is safe to say that AI has become a mainstay in our lives, and considering how apps like ChatGPT are finally available on both iOS and Android, and on-device AI is also making its way to phones next year, one wonders what is going to happen to the likes of Siri and Google Assistants, to virtual assistants that are still not on par with what AI is capable of. Well, it seems like Google has already thought about it, and the answer shouldn't be that surprising.

Google Assistant will have more AI-powered features with Bard integration but do we need it?

It seems like Google is planning on integrating its Bard AI with Google Assistant. The purpose here is rather simple--the search engine giant wants to supercharge the assistant, making it even more powerful with its LLM. The information was revealed in a leaked internal memo that was meant for employees. However, we still don't have a concrete timeline as to when it will happen, but you can expect changes to start showing up by the end of this year.

The leaked memo talks about Google Assistant and Bard, along with some restructuring that is happening at the company, especially amongst the teams working on these two assistants. Google is currently shuffling team members around, and the goal, as per the memo, is rather simple, the company looks “to explore what a supercharged Assistant, powered by the latest LLM technology, would look like.” The company has shown commitment to its assistant and is looking towards improving it to a point where it can help satisfy “people’s strong desire for assistive, conversational technology that can improve their lives.”

Now, it is important to understand that Google has talked about how it wants to start with mobile. This means that Google Assistant should be the first one to get in line. Now, this is not the first time we will see something powered by LLM coming to the Assistant as we all know that there is a feature in works that will summarize web pages for you using LLM. Sadly, the details at the moment are scarce, at best. This means we are going to have to wait to hear more about what Google is planning.

The most likely time of announcement for the new features is looking to be October since that is when Google is launching its Pixel 8 lineup, and considering how Tensor G3 will have more AI prowess, it would be safe to assume that we might get to see some AI-powered features at the launch event.

Do you think Google Assistant could use some help from Bard? Let us know how you feel about AI being so prevalent on your smartphone.
